Final Project

The first picture is to show I am sleeping in the bed in my home in America. 

The first half of my dream is the memories of the time before I left China. So I made a picture to show I am dreaming those memories. Each picture has its own special meaning. The first one in the upper left corner is the picture of my parents and I. We took this picture before I went abroad to leave some memory. The next small picture in the clockwise order is the last meal with my grandparents before I left China. The next picture is the building I lived in when I was in China. The next one is the picture of the west lake in my city. My city is famous for it. Whenever people hear the name of my city, they will think of this place. The next picture is the small town I grew up in. I lived with my grandparents when I was a kid. This small town has a lot of my childhood memories and the buildings’ style here is a very traditional. The next two small pictures are the pets in my home. The cat is already 16 years old, just 4 yeas younger than me! When I am home he always fight with me because he is jealous about me. I know it is funny but it is true. When I am home my parents pay more attention on me and he feels I steal my parents’ love for him. The dog is only 1 year old and he is so energetic.  The next one is the picture of my high school roommates and I. we lives in the same dorm for 3 years. We have very deep relationship with each other. The next picture has a picture with all of us in it. That’s the picture we stick on the door of our dorm as the identity picture of our dorm. The small pieces of paper in the picture are our name cards. Before graduation we signed on everyone’s name card and kept it as our memory. I still keep my piece in my home. The next one is the plate we use in our dinning hall. Before graduation we stole one plate from the dinning hall and used a special pan to sign on it. Yes, girls do crazy things before graduation! The next one is the picture of I and my good friends in my middle school. We hanged out together before I left China. I miss them! The last one in my dream of China part was taken when I hanged out with my elementary school classmates. How time flies! We are all big girl now!

The third picture shows I am dreaming the trip to USA and my first couple days in American. The first small picture is my flight I took to America. I cannot find a picture of the whole flight so I use the wing of the flight to show everyone that this is the flight I took to America. The next clockwise picture is the picture of James Earl Carter, I met him on my flight and shaked hand with him. When I shaked hand with him I totally had no idea about who he is. So I just felt weird and though it might be the America culture that shake hand with the people you meet even you don't know who he or she is. But after I shakes hand with him for a minute everyone in the flight started to take their cameras out and took pictures of him. Then I asked the lady sited next to me who he was. She told me that he is James Earl Carter. I didn't realize who he was because he was so different from his picture in my mind. I only knew how he looked like when he was still young. How amazing! I met the previous president on my flight! The next picture shows the two girls I met on my flight. They are so cute! They could be the first American friends I made. Then the next one is the first American land I saw after almost 10 hours flight. That was exciting! The next one is the baby of the host family I stayed with in the first couple days after I got America. I wanted to have a little brother at home when I was in China. But because of the one-child policy in China I can’t have a little brother. But the baby of my host family makes my dream come true! Every morning when I woke up and saw his smile I felt so happy! I loved him very much. The next picture is the Columbus zoo. That’s the first entertainment place I went to in Columbus. Then I came to OSU! The next picture is the marker of OSU. Then the next one is the hallway in my dorm. I took this picture when I first I got my dorm. The next one is the bed in my dorm. The next picture is the class schedule of my first quarter in OSU. The people in the next picture are my first Chinese friends I made in OSU. We always hang out in weekends. The last picture in the American part dream is I and my host family’s baby. When I first met him he cannot sit up by himself. But now he can walk and run! I put the picture here to show how time flies. I have stayed in America for two years!

The last picture is I waking up in the bed in my home in China. Even through I cannot remember all my dreams, I remembered that at the end of my dreams I was always flashed by a camera and then I woke up. So I made some flash effect on the left upper corner of the picture to show how I woke up.  I asked my parents to take a picture of my bed at home. And I asked them to make the bed look like someone sleep in there.  Then I use Photoshop to combine my head picture and the bed to make it look like I am waking up in the bed at my home in China. The bed looks normal to everyone, but it is very special for me. When I got the “bed” pictures from my parents, I was totally surprised. I put the elephant toy on my bed when I was in China and sometimes I even hold it when I fall asleep. My parents always make fun of me about it and say something like “You are already a big girl, how come you still sleep with a toy that only babies will play.” So I think they don’t like me do this kind of childish thing. I cleaned up my room before I left China and put the elephant in my closet.  But when my parents took the picture of my bed they took the elephant out and put it on my bed. I was just surprised and I felt so warm in my heart by this small action.  I can feel their love for me through it. Also I was surprised my parents knew which side I used to sleep on my bed. Even through my bed is very big, I never sleep in the middle of the bed. I always sleep on the right side of my bed. I was surprised they make the right side of my bed looks like someone sleep in here. I felt they knew everything about me and they cared about me all the time. When I was doing this project I was so happy because of this “bed” picture they sent me. I can feel their love for me. I think the love is the deep meaning of my project. Daddy, Mommy, I love you so much!

Brainstorming Process of final project

When I saw the instruction of the final project, I just realized that I was almost done with the Art Education class and it was almost final. Another quarter past. Time passed so quickly. Then I started to think about I have stayed in the U.S for almost two years and the time I back China again is closer. How time flies! Those time fly feelings makes me start to recall the time when I was in China. I miss my home! In my dream I always dream I back home, have dinner with my parents and hang out with my friends in China.  I miss my parents, my grandparents and my friends in China! So I thought that I could make my dream into the final project! Actually I didn't know the work narrative when I saw it. So I looked t up in dictionary and found that it is a similar word with story. I started to think about what story I can make about my dream. I want to make my China memories into my story so I started to look for the pictures I took that summer before I left China. Then I found a lot of pictures. Some were taken with my parents, some were taken with my friend, some were taken to leave some memories of China. They all have special meanings for me. So I want to make those memories into the story. A story of my memories in China. After that another idea came into my mind. Why not also make my memories of America into the story. I also loved here very much. So I decided to make my first part of my dream about my memories in China and the latter part of my dream about my memories in America. When I go to bed I always wish that I could find myself in the bed of my home when I wake up the next morning. Then I just thought that I can make a picture to make my wish come true. A picture shows I am waking up in the bed in China!  That will be cool! Then, to make the sequence more complete, I want to add a picture at the first to show I am sleeping in the bed in America. That is how my idea come from.

I really like this story.  It is very interesting and it is easy for me to read as a second language reader. I love the beginning of the story, which is a conversation between the couple. But I didn't quite understand it. The husband's emotion in this story is cute, which always makes me laugh. He is a kind of jealous about the blind man. The story tells husband and the wife's experience with the blind man. It recalls me the memory with a blind woman who was my neighbor when I was young. I moved to an other place when I was ten and I never saw her since then. So I am kind of know the husband's feeling that stay with a blind man. When I read the story, I started to think what the life is for a blind person. How they feel the world? How they live? Overall, I like this story.

Project5

My action word is layer. Actually I was not very familiar with this word as an action. What in my mind about this word is like a layer of chocolate in the cake. So when I think of layer as a verb, an action, I started to think maybe I can make some food like a cake which has many layers. But cake was so hard for me to make! So when I started to brainstorm, I was trying to find some food which are easy to make and I eat everyday. The thing came to my mind first was the sandwich. I eat it every morning as my breakfast and I love it very much! I never feel sick of it. And I enjoy the process making it. I always put lettuce, American cheese and turkey in my sandwich. Cheese goes first, turkey goes second and lettuce goes last. So I take pictures every time I made a new layer, setting the base bread, put on the cheese and turkey slices. But when layering the turkey slice, I found all the turkey slices are like one layer. But I want to distinguish them. I want to make the different turkey slices obvious. So I cut the slices into small pieces and put them cross to each other. At first I want to use those small pieces to make some weird shape like a knot. But after I tried I gave up because those small pieces were so easy to break. So I just cross them and took pictures every time I made one more layer. Then I layered the lettuce and bread on the top of the turkey slice and took pictures of each layer. After I made it I took a picture from the side to show the layers and a picture of the whole sandwich. Then I made those layer pictures around the final sandwich to show the process I made it and show each layer. After that, I took a picture when I ate it. Yummy!

Project 4

In my picture I was trying to show I have a power that can have all the work done automatically and get 100% correct! I am a student since I was 5 years old. As a student in China, I have very heavy study burden. Study is a very terrible thing for me. I don't know how much work I have done, I don't know how much time I have spent on study and I also don't know how many nights I have sacrificed my sleep time to catch up homework or to prepare for exam. But I know I really don't like to study. I always dream that one day, all the homework and the study is already done by itself. This might be ridiculous, but it is the power I want to own since I was a little kid. This is where my idea come from. I am really happy the Art Education give me a chance to make it as a picture! I I took this picture in study room because I spend a lot time study here. Sending message with my friends, playing computer and taking a nap are the three main things I will do when I take a break from studying. So I use these three positions to make the picture. The fourth picture from the left is to show the work is not only done by itself, also get 100% correct! What amazing power! What if I could really have it..

Project 3

The spot I chose is a parking spot. Almost every morning I am annoyed because I cannot find a parking spot. It is so hard to find a good parking plot on campus. Sometimes I have to park my car on west campus and then take a bus to central campus. So I really hope I can have a personal parking spot. A parking spot that is only for me! Ice-cream is one of my favorite things in my life. The cold stone ice-cream stand for the love with my boyfriend. I don't share my ice-cream with other people just like I don't share my boyfriend with other people. I put the ice-cream with my picture on it in my personal parking spot to tell other drivers that the parking spot is belonging to me. It is reserved for me. I made the ice-cream box so big that no one can take it away or hit it over and then park here. When I come to the parking spot the ice-cream box can recognize my face and then become small enough to hide under my car.

Micro Project 2

1. Shells

Shell is  my favorite thing in my life so far. I grew up in a coastal city in China. I love collecting shells since I was a kid. Every weekend my grandparents will bring me to the beach to have a walk along the beach. And I always collect a lot of shells while I am walking. Shells give me a lot of memories of my childhood with my grandparent. I got those shells in Galveston when I went to Texas for vacation this winter break. It remind me of my childhood. I put them in my room as decoration.

It is iPhone 4s. It is very useful and important for me. I use it to send messages and make calls to make connections with other people. I also use it to surf the internet, send email and take pictures when I am not near a computer. Wherever I go, I always bring it. If I forget to bring it with me I will feel very uncomfortable.

Running is a part of my life. I run 3 times a week in RPAC to exercise. Sometimes when the weather is nice I will run around campus with my roommate. It gives me good mood because when I am running I feel my brain is completely relaxed. Also it helps me build strong body!

It is a technology century. I use computer to know and to make connections to the rest of the world. I spend most of my time in front of computer every day to do school work, play games and surf the internet. The bottom of my laptop is broken so I took it off and put a red case on it. Red is my favorite color. I am glad I choose to be a buckeye because the color for OHIO is red!

5. Cold stone Ice cream

Ice cream is my favorite food. Every sunday I will go grocery store to buy a big bottle of ice cream. Cold stone is my favorite brand because it has special meaning for me. Every time when I date with my boyfriend he will give me a small bottle of cold stone chocolate ice-cream. So whenever I eat it I will think of my boyfriend and feel the love he gives me.

I love reading book. It expand my view and helps me know many things I don't know through the book. It gives me a lot of knowledge. This book I read is about finance. Doing business need a lot of experience. But I am still a student and don't have many experience. However, I can learn some experience from the book. Many successful person write their experience on the book. Through reading their experience I can get a scene what business need and what's going on in the business world.

I listen to music a lot of time when I am alone. I love listening to music when I walk alone. That makes me feel the road I walk is not that long. Also I feel amazing how music can change my mood. I wear this sea star Jewelry everyday. I got it from my Mom as Christmas gift last year. As all the other girls, I like to be beautiful. So I have a lot of jewelry and this sea star jewelry is one of my favorite because it is related to the sea. I love everything related to the sea.

9. Black tea

Tea is my favorite drink. I like all kinds of tea especially black tea. I make tea when I get up and back home everyday. Whenever I get thirsty or even not thirsty I will drink a cup of tea. I feel I am addicted to the tea. If I don't drink it for a while I will miss it. When I study in library I always buy a cup of hot tea from the coffee shop. It can make me more concrete on my study.


10. pencil

As a student, pencil has company me for so many years. Even through I don't like study, I cannot deny that pencil is a part of my life. I use them everyday. I cannot work without pencil. This is my first pencil I brought in America. I like to keep all the "first thing". So this pencil is a kind of special for me.

I use the sea picture as my background and put shells around my picture to emphasis the importance of shells and sea for me. That's the place I grew up. I am a sea girl:) I made computer and phone biggest and put them in the middle because I spend most of my time with them everyday. I cannot image the life without them. Other things I just put them in order so this picture can look beautiful. I am good at playing piano but I didn't include it in my picture because my piano is in my home in China. I miss it a lot. Also I am a very stubborn person. Whatever I decide to do, I will do it. The last thing about me is I am a dog person. I will be crazy when I see a dog.

Assignment 1

This is the way I go to school everyday. I just moved to my new home at the end of the winter break. So on the first day of class, it was the first time I drove to school from my new place. The route was completely new for me. In case of getting lost or being late for class, I looked into google map carefully at the night before first day of school and wrote down where I need to make a turn, which freeway I need to go, where I can enter the free way and so on.

I miss my sweet home every morning I leave home. So I took a picture of my home when I started my journey. As I drove to school on the first day of school, I was looking for the marker on the road carefully to make sure I need to turn right here or turn left there. So when I was doing this project, I looked into google map first to picture down the route I went and then I took pictures of all the road signs. I paid attention to the markers because on the first day of class those markers were very important for me! I never drive on those road before. Those markers help me know where I was and which road I was driving on. So I took a lot pictures of those road markers and then inserted them to the route I pictured and made a map how I went to school. After I arrived school, I can only park in C parking area because I only get C parking permit. So I looked for the  sign"C" to find the place I can park on the first day of class. Then I found one C parking area next to Taylor. So I took a picture of the "C"parking sign and then parked my car!  That's my journey to class!

My Journey to Class on The First Day

Every morning I drive to campus. It is a kind of long way. On the Google Map it says the distance between school and my home is 9.3 miles and it costs 19 minutes to drive to school. But usually I only use 15 minutes to get school. Of course it doesn’t include the time looking for a parking plot. It is so hard to find a good parking plot in the “C” park area on campus! I feel the drivers in the parking area are crazy! Everyone is trying to accelerate the car, not slow down the car to get a parking plot in the parking area. I am always the looser when competing for getting a parking plot due to my poor driving skill and “let other people go first” attitude. I still remember how embarrassing I was to find the Art Education 252 classroom on the first day of school. I never have classes in stadium before and I even don’t know there is any classroom in stadium. There are many entrances to the stadium. So when I was looking for the classroom on the first day, I worried a lot about which entrance should I go? The stadium is so big, once I enter a wrong door I will totally get lost in stadium! As I walked around the stadium to find the entrance I should enter, I saw some people wearing uniforms go out of a door. So I think there may have some classrooms after that entrance and I walked into that door. But as I walked upstairs, the people who were going down and wearing uniforms all looked at me strangely. Then I realized I went in a wrong place. So I went out of stadium and looked for the right entrance again. Finally, I saw a paper and saying “Art Education 252 is in here!” I was so excited when I saw that note. Then I followed the arrows and found the classroom. I set off home 1 hour earlier before the class time so I was not late for the class. Such a hard trip to classroom on the first day!

Kimmelman Article

I like the way the article introduce the book. It quotes the introduction from the book and gives some background of the book, which helps the readers know more about the book and have a idea about what the book talking about. Through reading this article I feel like the people who introduce this book is talking to me directly by the tone he uses in the article. He also talks about some of his own story and experience. It makes me feel more interesting and not feel bored when I read this article. I also like its ending. The author of the article asks some questions at the end of article, which makes me feel more interested in this book and want to read the book.

Even through the article introduce the book very well; I didn’t see its main point of this article. It didn’t show reader the strong point of the book.  It makes me feel the book is just  as “normal” as other book even through it is interesting.

Response to Walker

I agree with the author’s idea that theme sometimes is the same thing as big idea but sometimes not. In today’s Art Education class we watched two videos and the instructor asked us to write down the artists’ theme and idea. At that time I was confused because I felt theme is the same thing as idea. But the author helps me solve this confusion. Theme sometimes is just a part of the big idea. Just like the example the author gives us, Motherwell’s the big idea is the exploration of human emotions; but the theme that people’s emotion’s towards death is just a part of human emotion. I also like the example of Jennifer Bartlett that Jennifer’s subject is Garden but Jennifer’s idea is the use of rules and systems.

           

             I cannot understand the idea of the first picture on page 9. Also her horse artwork is a kind of weird to me. From the introduction of her I think she like horses and she has great passion to horses. So I think the artwork of horses made by her should make the audience feel her passion to horse. But through her work I cannot see any beautiful side of the horse. What I see is a horse stuck in fence made by the wood. I don’t disagree anything in this article. Overall I like this article’s idea very much.

            I like the example that analysis of a photographic magazine ad for Panzani spaghetti products when the author wants to illustrate the distinction between denotations and connotations. The interesting point here is that he uses the sounds of ‘Italianicity” to resemble the word Panzani. It exactly explain the distinction between denotations and connotations.

            I have some confusion about “booty” which explained by the author. It may because I am not familiar with American Culture. I agree that the magazine cover is connoted to be aggressive. But I don’t agree that it is emotionally shallow.

Response to The Cheese Monkeys

I love the author’s idea that “ big and small can extend to infinity.” We can never say what is the “smallest” because there is always exist something that is smaller and we don’t know what is the “biggest” because it is infinity, just like we never know the smallest number and the biggest number. The other thing I found which is interesting is the way he thinks of viruses. He thinks viruses are fools. When talk about viruses, people always think they are bad, disgusting and scared. But I have never seen anyone think viruses are fool. After reading his explanation of why viruses are fool, I strongly agree with his idea because only the fool will work so hard to let it die. 

            I don’t agree with the author’s thought that people will picture Tuesday on the left and Thursday on the right when he says, “Things go from left” on Tuesday and then say “to right” on Thursday. What come to my mind when I read what he says is the on Tuesday everything go from the left side; everyone comes from the left side of a city and heading to the downtown, the traffic all come from the left side. Similarly, “to right” on Thursday makes me picture that on Thursday everything goes to the right. There is a place in this article confuse me. In a paragraph he writes “Conversely, TWA comes a knocking, and wants a poster boasting of their powers. Why not use a shot of a long bird-a midflight speck in a vast, sheltering sky. Have the type trailing after it, and, when I zoom in to read…oh…it’s not a bird at all. A plane” I don’t know what’s the purpose the author write it and I don’t know what he wants to express.

I love the idea that the game, playing basketball is an art. It is very interesting. Before reading the article I think the players in the game just want to win, they don’t care about anything else. But now I think the players in the game not only want to win, they also want to present the audience a beautiful performance, a beautiful image of the game. They try to win quickly and beautifully. They try to shot in a beautiful position.

I don’t understand dripped paint in this article. What is dripped paint? In the article the author feel the rule make the game worse. The rules make the game as a film directed by the coach. And the basketball today is high profitable and bad moral. I don’t agree with this idea. I think no one control this game. The coach in the game is just to make the game more successful, to prevent some moral hazard and to help the players to play better.

Introduction

My name is Yi.  I am sophomore at OSU. My major is Finance.  I am from China and it is my second year in the United State. I am a dog person. I kept a dog as pet when I was at home in China. My dog is a boy and his name is Eli. He is a pretty puppy and has brown hair. People always think he is a toy not a real dog because he looks just like a doll. I went to Houston during the winter break. I love the weather here! It is much warmer than in Columbus. The temperature in Houston was always 70+ degree when I was here. I  am used to the warm weather because the temperature in my city is always warm. I just went back to Columbus the day before yesterday and it was so chilly when I got off the airplane! Hope the winter weather can end soon even through I know it will last until March..I attach the picture of me with my love dog!
